Hating Comic Sans is Ableist in Top 20

Hating Comic Sans is Ableist in Top 20

My essay about my sister, dyslexia, and Comic Sans was one of the top 20 most read essays on The Establishment for 2017. By tackling crucial issues with nuanced incisiveness, these 20 stories — the most read and shared of the year — played a key part in making 2017, in some ways at least, bearable and even emboldening. Now, please: Can 2018 actually be better than 2017?

Guest Post: Chicken Paprikash

Guest Post: Chicken Paprikash

It’s a guest post from my sister, Jess Hudgins, about a card from our dead mom’s recipe box. Our mother’s side of the family had a lot of pride in being Hungarian. This recipe is probably from Woman’s Day. CHICKEN PAPRIKASH Free time while dinner cooks: 35-40 min Top each serving with a generous spoonful of sour cream or plain yogurt. If you like paprikash extra hot and spicy, look for hot Hungarian paprika. Complete your supper with a crisp…

Mysterious Stinkhorn Growing on a Tree

Mysterious Stinkhorn Growing on a Tree

On 11/19/17 my sister, Jess Hudgins, was hiking in Cook Forest State Park when she found a stinkhorn growing on a tree at the junction of Tom’s Run Road and Brown’s Run. Thinking the stinkhorn looked particularly phallic growing from an upright tree, she snapped a couple unfocused pictures to send to me. I cannot find any other reports of a stinkhorn growing on a tree. They are known to grow in rich soil and on very rotted wood. Jess…

To the Point Collaborative- Wikipedia Consulting

One of my clients is to To the Point Collaborative. They’re a very friendly digital agency that does branding, design and marketing—focusing on healthcare and nonprofits. I do digital advertising for them. The most fascinating service they offer is wikipedia consulting. Many companies and individuals with personal brands struggle with Wikipedia. They’re represented on Wikipedia in a way they feel is unfair or outdated. Since many information seekers look to Wikipedia as a first and trusted source, it’s a pretty…

Peanut Sauce

Peanut Sauce

It’s another entry from my dead mom’s recipe box. I genuinely approve of this recipe. This is the first recipe I’ve tried out of this box that is good. It’s a tangy peanut sauce rather than a sweet peanut sauce (unless you use sweetened peanut butter). PEANUT SAUCE 1 tablespoon peanut oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 3 tablespoons minced onion ¼ cup crunchy peanut butter ¼ cup chicken broth or water ½ cup coconut milk or milk 2 teaspoons fresh…

Mushroom Soup (Specialty of The Breakers)

Mushroom Soup (Specialty of The Breakers)

It’s another entry from my dead mom’s recipe box. Turns out there are divider labels in the box, the labels are just very difficult to read. This is a very plain recipe for mushroom soup that is a “speciality of The Breakers.” (What are The Breakers?) Since this is from an area of the box that is mostly soups recipe, I imagine the divider label once said “soups.” MUSHROOM SOUP (Specialty of The Breakers) Full of flavor and so easy…

magi-11 year old dystopian resident

My sister recently found an unfinished young-adult mecha scifi in our parents’ house. She insists it isn’t her writing, so it’s probably mine, but I don’t remember it. Maybe I do? I think I was in a creative writing course at a summer camp when I was 13, and our teacher told us to try writing the voice of someone much younger. To me, 11 years old was much younger. Typos are consistent with what was originally written. I think…

Fresh Mushroom Salad—Do Not Eat

Fresh Mushroom Salad—Do Not Eat

I found this recipe for Fresh Mushroom Salad in my dead mom’s recipe box. This is a recipe absolutely no one should follow. While it might be ok to eat a king bolete raw, the mushrooms you get from the store—button mushrooms, creminis, portobellos—are all Agaricus bisporus and they may all be toxic. Cooking the mushrooms will remove much of the toxins. So here’s the recipe for what it’s worth, which really isn’t much. I don’t know where it came…

Curried Cream of Corn Soup

Curried Cream of Corn Soup

Another entry from my dead mom’s recipe box. I have found a digitized version of this curried cream of corn soup in the Christian Science Monitor archives from 1985. I would have been a year old. Vegetables: they aren’t what they used to be. They’ve gotten a lot bigger, or at least that’s the impression I got from making this recipe. I only had large onions. Those come standard in the grocery stores now. It’s difficult to find a medium…
